TD [DISQUS]: My particular issue couldn't be resolved by changing the TEMP path because my file path was still too long. The workaround I came up with was to:

1. Navigate to: [chefdk_install_directory]\opscode\chefdk\embedded\apps\test-kitchen\lib\kitchen\provisioner

2. Open up base.rb

3. Find the 'create_sandbox' method

4. Replace it with the following code instead

   def create_sandbox  
   @sandbox_path = Dir.mktmpdir("#{[instance.name](http://instance.name)}-sandbox-")
   
   require 'win32api' #  
   win_func = [Win32API.new](http://Win32API.new)("kernel32","GetShortPathName","PPL"," L") #
   
   buf = 0.chr * 256 #  
   buf[0..@sandbox_path.length-1] = @sandbox_path #  
   [win_func.call](http://win_func.call)(@sandbox_path, buf, buf.length) #  
   @sandbox_path = buf.split(0.chr).first #
   
   File.chmod(0755, sandbox_path)  
   info("Preparing files for transfer")  
   debug("Creating local sandbox in #{sandbox_path}")  
   end
   

5. Note 1: Lines that are marked with a '#' are the important ones (the rest of the lines already exist in the unmodified file). These lines convert a long windows path name into its short equivalent which in my case cut out about 45 characters, bringing my path length well within 255 characters. This was without having to change the TEMP path directory.

6. Note 2: I couldn't find a way to change the sandbox directory, but the whole TEMP directory can be changed in windows if you need further shortening of the path name. See this link (look at the System Temp instructions):
