# 8 - Extending a Wired Network with Wireless Devices
1+
# 8 - How to Add a Wireless Access Point to a Network
2+
3+
This tutorial builds upon the network designed in [Tutorial 5](../tutorial-series/tutorial5), where we implemented inter-VLAN routing using trunk links and subinterfaces. In this lesson, we'll integrate a **wireless access point** into that existing network to support **wireless clients** without introducing a new routing layer.
4+
5+
We'll demonstrate how to add and configure an **AccessPoint-PT**, attach it to an existing switch, and connect a wireless laptop that can communicate with the rest of the VLAN.
6+
7+
---
8+
9+
## Objectives
10+
11+
* Use an **AccessPoint-PT** instead of a wireless router
12+
* Extend **Department B (VLAN 20)** to include wireless devices
13+
* Configure wireless hardware manually in Cisco Packet Tracer
14+
* Assign static IPs to wireless clients
15+
* Verify **intra-VLAN** and **inter-VLAN** connectivity
16+
17+
---
18+
19+
## Part 1 – Base Topology
20+
21+
We will continue using the existing network from **Tutorial 5**. The topology includes:
22+
23+
* **Switch0** and **Switch1** connected to a router (`Router0`) using trunk ports
24+
* **PC0** and **PC1** in VLAN 10
25+
* **PC2** and **PC3** in VLAN 20
26+
27+
![Figure](../../img/cisco-tutorials/tutorial-8/fig1.png)
28+
29+
Our goal is to connect a wireless laptop to **Switch1** (VLAN 20) using an access point.

32+
33+
## Part 2 – Adding the Access Point
34+
35+
### Step 2.1 – Place the Access Point
36+
37+
1. Go to **Network Devices > Wireless Devices**.
38+
2. Drag and drop an **AccessPoint-PT** onto the workspace.
39+
40+
![Figure](../../img/cisco-tutorials/tutorial-8/fig2.png)
41+
42+
### Step 2.2 – Add a FastEthernet Interface
43+
44+
By default, AccessPoint-PT does not have a wired Ethernet port, so we need to modify it:
45+
46+
1. Click on the **AccessPoint-PT**.
47+
2. Navigate to the **Physical tab**.
48+
3. Click the **power switch** to turn off the device.
49+
![Figure](../../img/cisco-tutorials/tutorial-8/fig3.png)
50+
4. Remove the existing module (if any).
51+
5. Install the **PT-REPEATER-NM-1CFE** module into the expansion slot.
52+
![Figure](../../img/cisco-tutorials/tutorial-8/fig4.png)
53+
6. Turn the device back on using the power switch.
54+
55+
### Step 2.3 – Connect Access Point to the Network
56+
57+
1. Use a **Copper Straight-Through** cable.
58+
2. Connect the **Access Point's FastEthernet0** port to **Switch1 fa0/23**.
59+
60+
This links the Access Point directly to VLAN 20, where PC2 and PC3 are already connected. If you followed the tutorial 5, then this port should already be configured with the correct VLAN settings.

66+
## Part 3 – Add and Configure the Wireless Laptop
67+
68+
### Step 3.1 – Add the Laptop
69+
70+
1. Go to **End Devices**.
71+
2. Drag and place a **Laptop** onto the workspace.
72+
73+
### Step 3.2 – Install Wireless Adapter
74+
75+
1. Click the Laptop.
76+
2. Go to the **Physical tab**.
77+
3. Power off the device.
78+
![Figure](../../img/cisco-tutorials/tutorial-7/fig4.png)
79+
4. Remove the existing FastEthernet module (if present).
80+
5. Add a **WPC300N** wireless card.
81+
![Figure](../../img/cisco-tutorials/tutorial-7/fig5.png)
82+
6. Power the laptop back on.
83+
84+
### Step 3.3 – Connect to Wireless Network
85+
86+
1. Open the **Desktop tab**.
87+
2. Go to **PC Wireless**.
88+
3. Click **Connect** to the SSID broadcasted by the Access Point.
89+
90+

93+
94+
## Part 4 – Assign Static IP to Wireless Laptop
95+
96+
Because we are not using DHCP in this tutorial, assign the IP manually:
97+
98+
1. Go to the **Desktop > IP Configuration** on the laptop.
99+
2. Enter the following values:
100+
101+
* **IP Address**: `192.168.20.15`
102+
* **Subnet Mask**: `255.255.255.0`
103+
* **Default Gateway**: `192.168.20.1`
104+
105+
This configuration places the laptop in the same subnet and VLAN as PC2 and PC3.
106+
107+
![Figure](../../img/cisco-tutorials/tutorial-8/fig6.png)
108+
109+
Your network should now look like this:
110+
111+

112+
113+
---
114+
115+
## Part 5 – Verifying Wireless Connectivity
116+
117+
### Step 5.1 – Ping a Wired Host in VLAN 20
118+
119+
From the **Laptop**, open **Command Prompt** and type:
120+
121+
```bash
122+
ping 192.168.20.14
123+
```
124+
125+
> This pings PC3. If successful, the laptop is correctly integrated into VLAN 20.
126+
127+
![Figure](../../img/cisco-tutorials/tutorial-8/fig7.png)
128+
129+
### Step 5.2 – Ping a Host in VLAN 10
130+
131+
Still on the Laptop, ping a host in another VLAN (e.g., PC0):
132+
133+
```bash
134+
ping 192.168.10.11
135+
```
136+
137+
> If this succeeds, the router-on-a-stick configuration is working correctly and routing between VLANs.
138+

## Summary
144+
145+
In this tutorial, you:
146+
147+
* Added an **AccessPoint-PT** to an existing VLAN-based network
148+
* Installed a FastEthernet port into the access point to connect it to a switch
149+
* Configured a **wireless laptop** to join the VLAN and communicate with other devices
150+
* Verified both **intra-VLAN** and **inter-VLAN** connectivity
151+
152+
This setup demonstrates how to extend an enterprise VLAN structure to support wireless clients without compromising VLAN isolation or needing extra routers.
