MySQL 8.0 introduced Atomic DDL, ensuring that schema changes (like ALTER TABLE) are either fully committed or fully rolled back in the event of failure. This reduces the risk of corruption or inconsistent states during schema changes.

MariaDB uses Aria, a crash-safe alternative to MyISAM for the system tables. Howeer, Aria does not have full Atomic DDL support.

### Native Data Dictionary

MySQL 8.0 introduced a Native Data Dictionary, which is used to store metadata (like table definitions and schema information) in transactional tables within the InnoDB engine. This eliminates the need for traditional `.frm` files and improves the management of metadata, especially during upgrades and changes.
