UMLS Licensing

point 3 - LICENSEE is prohibited from distributing the UMLS Metathesaurus or subsets of it, including individual vocabulary sources within the Metathesaurus, except (a) as an integral part of computer applications developed by LICENSEE for a purpose other than redistribution of vocabulary sources contained in the UMLS Metathesaurus and (b) if permitted by paragraph 12 of this agreement - by investigating individually, each of the vocabularies we are ensuring that we are not violating any of the individual vocabulary licenses (link to read me)

EMAIL OLIVIER

point 4 - LICENSEE agrees to inform NLM prior to distributing any application(s) in which it is using the UMLS Metathesaurus and is encouraged to inform NLM of any difficulties encountered in using the UMLS Metathesaurus, and changes or enhancements to the UMLS Metathesaurus that would make it more useful to LICENSEE and its user groups.

To ensure that we are not violating any of the Terms and Conditions specified in the UMLS License, we have decided to generate two versions of the SemRepRDF annotations:

  1. SemRepRDF-UMLS: this version will generate output in compliance with the UMLS license and thus will only be available to users who have obtained a UMLS license. More details will be provided as we have them, but this resource will most likely be made available for download directly from the UMLS.
  2. SemRepRDF-Open: this version will generate linked annotations using only open vocabularies, terminologies, and ontologies. This representation is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. To ensure that we are not in violation of the UMLS license and are complying with the Semantic Knowledge Representation Terms and of Use, we will do the following:
    • Internally map all CUIs to open resource concept identifiers, thus removing any mappings to UMLS Thesaurus vocabularies that have copyright constraints. The specific resources used, including details regarding their mapping can be found on the Resource Mapping Wiki sub-page.

For both representations, the following documentation will be included in the repository readme, source code as well as in any output data in order to be compliant with the SemRep Terms of Use:

  • SemRep is the original source of the predications.
  • Database Version; SemRep Version; Date
  • Minor modifications to original SemRep predications include the mapping of UMLS CUIs to open resource concept identifiers (only for SemRepRDF-Open).
  • Neither the United States Government, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the National Institutes of Health, the National Library of Medicine, the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications, nor any of their agencies, contractors, subcontractors, or employees make any warranties, expressed or implied, with respect to the SKR resources, and furthermore, they assume no liability for any party's use, or the results of such use, of any part of these tools.
