Question on "fetch" method

Hi, I'm a bit confused. I don't really understand the purpose of "fetch" if, in the end, the checksum has to be the same and the file already needs to be present in the src folder. Maybe I don't fully understand the English explanation. What's the point of downloading a file and compiling it but not executing it? Or did I misunderstand something?
