Problem when using merge-path with mark at v0.4.2

I am currently rewriting the code from v0.4.1 to v0.4.2.
The following problem was found. I would like to know how to resolve this issue.

It's great that v0.4.2 allows using marge-path with the mark:(start:?) option.

I've opened a PR for a fix here: #962.
Thank you for the bug report.

It happens to be the empty line segment before the curve, that crashes the shortening algorithm.
