Provide means to run local unit tests consistently 

As a long time user of this tool, I wanted to start contributing to the project. I discovered that running the local unit tests in a consistent way was a bit challenging (especially when running the tests against different versions of Python).

It would be great if there was a consistent way to run the unit tests locally.
