ChapelCon '25 Tutorial Topics

Howdy everyone! ChapelCon '25 is less than 2 months away, and the organizing committee is hard at work putting together a program that'll be engaging for all experience levels. The first two days of ChapelCon this year are "Coding Days," which will have tutorials and exercises demonstrating different Chapel features.

We want to collect topics that the community is interested in learning more about. Anything from basic features like file IO, to more advanced features like aggregators and iterators. Sound off below with topics you want to see!

• How to write custom parallel iterators for user defined data

• how to write custom reductions
• how to write custom IO serializers

• use cases where Chapel performs better than other tools

  • a computationally heavy thing like CoralReef code and quickly getting it to run on a GPU
  • take an existing Python code that analyzes data in a file and scale it to process multiple files using distributed parallelism and task parallelism
  • Lydia's HPO example that there is a blog post on

• for any of the other things you cover, make sure to answer the question "why should the audience care?". More specifically, what kind of problem might they have that the feature being covered can help with. Context matters.

• how to set up a Containerfile with Chapel compiler and runtime that can be used on a desktop and also how it could run on a cluster like an HPE EX

  • Ahmad has a good starting point with what he did with SST
  • figuring out how to get it to work with GPUs would help
