How to get Linux kernel log in macOS terminal?

Maybe this is obvious, but I cannot seem to find it.

How can I get a Linux's kernel log, and everything else that's exported to tty (e.g. a systemd service with StandardOutput=tty) in my macOS host terminal? I was hoping it would just stream after running tart run ....

There's a --serial command-line argument to tart run.

When started with it, tart run will print something like:

Successfully open pty /dev/ttys001

Afterwards, you can connect to that PTY device via Minicom:

minicom -b 115200 -D /dev/ttys001

You also need to configure the Linux kernel in a guest accordingly. Assuming that /etc/default/grub is used:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="console=hvc0"

I tried to get it to work, but Debian does not boot anymore after adding that cmdline and running update-grub. It hangs on 'Loading initial ramdisk...' with 'EFI stub:' drawn over it.

Can you reproduce that?

It does not boot indeed with Debian 12 (bookworm).

If you try pulling the latest ghcr.io/cirruslabs/debian:latest image, it should give you Debian 13 (trixie), which seems to work.

Thanks. It does indeed boot now, with no kernel log visible in the graphics, which must be good.

Buuut, I don't see any logs on /dev/ttys00X (whichever tart returns). Not using minicom or screen.

I also get this behavior when I connect to the TTY too late in the kernel boot process.

What if you try rebooting the guest after you've already started the Minicom session?
