What is the reason behind the design Arrays are treated as "escape sequences" ?

At first I felt this protocol is amazing

However I am very confused why instead of serialized typed object as object, this protocol choose to use weirdly wrapped array instead?

Are there any system already use this pattern or something?

@kentonv Such as firebase and couchdb I am familiar with. They both just use object with special property as a marker that it is the object of their system

If it is object with property _id and _revision (from couchDB) or __Id__ (from firebase) then it is document object of their system for example

Some system use $ as a marker. But almost all of them I have remember use object
