TAB stops differ during VS Code active edits

I have seen with prior versions of VS Code and with my current version (1.68.1) where the tabs stops become larger than defined in the settings.

I don't know what makes the edit tab think it needs a large tab stop and I can't reliably get it to return to the defined value of 2 as defined in the settings.

Is this a problem with VS Code or the extension's implementation of IBM source languages in VS Code? This happens a lot more than I would like it to and I don't know exactly what is needed to make it revert back to the default tab stop.

I have tried closing out all open tabs, closing VS Code, and restarting. Nothing I do seems to force it back to using the default tab stops.

I did find out how to change the tabs for the one source tab that was converted to 3 spaces per tab. To change this value, you need to click on the status bar with the word "Spaces: x"

then select the drop down

item for using spaces and you get a selection of the number of spaces to use.

Seems strange that my RPG source ends up with a different tab stop number.
