I see a similar issue that was resolved, but reinstalling didn't work for me. It also mentions that after running the command, there should be something in the output tab, but as that user stated, my output tab is also empty.

Is the source on the IFS or in a source member?
Is just one SQLRPG source that has the problem, or all?
Can you compile other kinds of source, e.g., plain RPG or CL?
Which was the other issue you found?

well, I just came back to CODE after installing it about a year or so ago, (primarily just testing the waters). Couldn't compile anything, so I uninstalled and re installed everything. Still not working. I think on my previous use, I was able to compile. I'll try some other files/objects. It just seems like it's not finding something it needs, as it just fails.

What do you mean by 'New Connection' and why? I just removed and reinstalled everything, including the connection. So it is a 'NEW' connection.

I can connect, open source files, and so on. But I can't compile anything. SO, when I try to compile I get a popup in the lower right, and nothing else happens. When I click on the popup it disappears, and then returns' command did not run'.

Sorry, you probably don't need a new connection since you re-installed the extension.

The maintainers usually want to see what you have in the Code for IBM i in the OUTPUT tab. So here's what I suggest:

1. Restart vscode
2. connect
3. try a failing compile
4. copy and paste the contents of the Code for IBM i output here. (see the screen shot in Compile Task of "Create SQL ILE RPG Program (CRTSQLRPGI)" did not run #2584 if you have trouble finding this.)

(I'm just a user and not one of the maintainers. I usually work on PUB400 and right now it is down.)

Any idea how this is related to the OUTPUT being empty? After I run the action, I see it in the terminal and a pop-up on the lower right. But, it doesn't do anything; it just sits there. Then, when I click the pop-up, it returns with the failure message.

It seems like it can't find some resource or lacks permissions, etc.

Two things:

1. Have you looked at the documentation section "Compile Listing" in case it provides anything useful?
2. The Code for IBM i OUTPUT info will probably be needed.

OK, umm, I'm literally the stupidest person on earth....

It never occurred to me that when the command/action bar(?) gets highlighted, T was supposed to hit enter. My focus was on the POPUP notification, and anything I did after that it would fail. Which is exactly how it should work, sort of.

Documentation doesn't clearly say to press enter (although that would be obvious next step), but the POPUP (see below) made me think it was already running.

I think this might be a bug, or a new feature 😮‍💨 . I haven't been on the I for a while, but I noticed the same thing today and I don't recall having to an extra key press.

I can confirm the issue as reported.

I'm on PUB400 and here I have just done Ctrl+E to compile and get several possible actions:

The first one is highlighted so I press enter to run. (Clicking on one of the options has the same result as pressing enter.)
This is what shows up:

At this point nothing is happening. It just sits there until I press enter again.

I can see that this could be confusing for new users.

My thoughts:

I admit to confusion on the purpose of the " Running action Create SQL ..." window with a "Cancel" button.

1. Is it an attempt to allow cancelation of the action after it had started running on the host?
2. Or is it just a confirmation of the input file and the action about to be taken when Enter is pressed?
3. Or was it intended as just a confirmation of the input file and that the action is now running?

If 1., I suppose it might be useful for a large compile on a slow or busy host.

If 2., it should say "Press enter to run Create SQL ..." or some similar verbiage. But I dislike the extra key stroke and question if it is necessary.

If 3., it should appear after the action is submitted to the host.

thanks a lot for looking into that. I get your point and I agree: that notification window should not appear while the action is being prompted. That only happens when an action is run on a single item. I'll try to fix it (even though the logic around this is a pain 😄)
