Heat Resistance Munich #16

Description

Prepare Munich for the Heat

Situation

With climate change, we will have more hot summers. Heat kills. It is estimated that up to 70.000 people died of it in 2003, which makes it one of the deadliest weather events in the last 100 years.

This may be obvious, but it is not yet integrated in city planning, architecture and our daily lives.

Munich has the highest percentage of sealed soil, covered by buildings or asphalt: 46% of the area Map in "Der Spiegel"

What Helps?

From here, it's a stub - please fill

  • Breathing Parking Lots
  • Less Parking Lots
  • Green Facades, Roofs
  • Trees
  • Micro-Parks instead of asphalt
  • Paint the city white

Get people involved who know this stuff - see below

Involving the People with IT support

There are many very local aspects where people can contribute naturally.

  • People can take pictures where asphalt can be replaced by green
  • People can measure the heat (before / after)

IT Support:

  • Maps
  • IOT (heat measurements)

Natural Alliances

This project calls for a broad coalition of individuals, organizations and institutions

  • Green City
  • City of Munich Baureferat
  • Traffic Planning
  • Urban Gardening
  • Health Professionals

What's Wrong with This

One issue with this approach to the climate crisis is that we improve our local situation so that we can ignore what is going on world wide. We have to be very clear that this is not the idea, but we cannot deny that there's something to it. Still, it's better than buying air condition for your office, house and car.

History

This idea popped up some time in 2018 (eGovernment Day?)
