- # How to Transfer Files from [[iPhone]] [[Files App]] to [[Mac]] via [[USB]]
4+
- ## Goal
5+
- Transfer files stored in the iPhone Files app to a Mac computer using a USB cable connection
6+
- ## Preconditions
7+
- iPhone with iOS 11 or later
8+
- Mac computer (macOS Catalina or later uses Finder; earlier versions use iTunes)
9+
- USB cable (Lightning-to-USB or USB-C, depending on your iPhone model)
10+
- Files app installed (built-in)
11+
- ## Important Limitations
12+
- **File Location Matters**: Files stored in "On My iPhone" are app-specific and only accessible if the app supports file sharing
13+
- **iCloud Drive Files**: Files in iCloud Drive sync automatically and don't require USB transfer
14+
- **App Support Required**: Only apps that support file sharing will appear in Finder
15+
- ## Procedure
16+
- ### Method 1: Using Finder File Sharing (macOS Catalina and later)
17+
- **Connect Your iPhone:**
18+
- Use a USB cable to connect your iPhone to your Mac
19+
- Unlock your iPhone
20+
- If prompted, tap "Trust This Computer" and enter your iPhone passcode
21+
- **Open Finder:**
22+
- Open Finder on your Mac
23+
- In the Finder sidebar, look for your iPhone under "Locations"
24+
- Click on your iPhone to select it
25+
- **Access File Sharing:**
26+
- Click on the "Files" tab in the main Finder window
27+
- You'll see a list of apps that support file sharing
28+
- Select the app that contains the files you want to transfer
29+
- **Transfer Files:**
30+
- To copy files to your Mac: Drag and drop files from the app's list to a folder on your Mac
31+
- To add files from your Mac to your iPhone: Drag and drop files from your Mac into the app's list in Finder
32+
- ### Method 2: Using iCloud Drive (Recommended for Most Files)
33+
- **On iPhone:**
34+
- Open the Files app
35+
- Navigate to the file you want to transfer
36+
- Long-press the file and select "Move" or "Copy"
37+
- Navigate to iCloud Drive
38+
- Tap "Copy" or "Move" to place the file in iCloud Drive
39+
- **On Mac:**
40+
- Files in iCloud Drive will automatically sync to your Mac
41+
- Open Finder and navigate to iCloud Drive in the sidebar
42+
- Your files will be available there
43+
- **Note**: This method doesn't require USB, but files sync automatically when both devices are connected to the internet
44+
- ### Method 3: For Files in "On My iPhone" Location
45+
- **Identify the Source App:**
46+
- Files in "On My iPhone" are stored within specific apps
47+
- Check which app created or stores the file
48+
- **Check App File Sharing Support:**
49+
- Connect iPhone via USB and open Finder
50+
- Look for the app in the File Sharing section
51+
- If the app appears, you can transfer files using Method 1
52+
- If the app doesn't appear, it doesn't support file sharing via USB
53+
- ## Alternative Methods (When USB File Sharing Isn't Available)
54+
- **AirDrop:**
55+
- Open Files app on iPhone
56+
- Long-press the file and select "Share"
57+
- Choose "AirDrop" and select your Mac
58+
- Accept the transfer on your Mac
59+
- **Email or Cloud Services:**
60+
- Use the Share sheet in Files app
61+
- Send files to yourself via email or upload to cloud storage
62+
- **Third-Party Apps:**
63+
- Use apps like Documents by Readdle or FileBrowser that support more file transfer options
64+
- ## Troubleshooting
65+
- **iPhone doesn't appear in Finder:**
66+
- Ensure iPhone is unlocked and you've tapped "Trust This Computer"
67+
- Try disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable
68+
- Check that you're using a data-capable USB cable (not just charging cable)
69+
- **App doesn't appear in File Sharing:**
70+
- The app may not support file sharing
71+
- Try using iCloud Drive or AirDrop instead
72+
- **Files not syncing from iCloud Drive:**
73+
- Ensure both devices are signed into the same Apple ID
74+
- Check that iCloud Drive is enabled in Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud
75+
- Ensure both devices have internet connectivity
