That would definitely be very useful!
If it helps: in my PR #206 I implemented a small system for populating dropdowns and validating the selected value. It also stores the name when the referenced element no longer exists and shows a TriValidationResult.Error with a Fix button that clears the invalid entry. This kind of behavior can be helpful, for example, if a layer gets deleted and you want to avoid silent failures.
