Here's what an AI tool spat out, hopefully useful for anyone else looking for AMD64 binaries. All of this is provided without any warranty:

Ipopt Build Script

Automated script to build a self-contained Ipopt shared library with MUMPS for Linux AMD64.

Quick Start

# Build Ipopt 3.14.19 without ASL (default, smaller binary)
./build-ipopt.sh

# Build with ASL (AMPL interface, adds ~640KB)
./build-ipopt.sh --with-asl

# Build a different version
./build-ipopt.sh 3.14.16
./build-ipopt.sh 3.14.16 --with-asl

What It Does

1. Installs dependencies - build-essential, gfortran, LAPACK/BLAS dev packages
2. Downloads coinbrew - COIN-OR build utility
3. Fetches Ipopt - Downloads specified version and dependencies (MUMPS, optionally ASL)
4. Builds static libraries - Compiles with -fPIC -O2 optimization
5. Bundles into single .so - Combines Ipopt and MUMPS (optionally ASL), dynamically links LAPACK/BLAS
6. Tests the library - Runs verification test
7. Creates package - Generates tarball with library and headers

ASL (AMPL Interface)

By default, ASL is excluded to reduce binary size:

• Without ASL: ~5 MB
• With ASL: ~5.6 MB (adds 640 KB)

Use --with-asl flag if you need AMPL model file support.

Standard Library Dependencies

The script dynamically links to common mathematical libraries instead of bundling them, significantly reducing binary size while maintaining broad compatibility.

Dynamically linked libraries:

• liblapack - Linear algebra package
• libblas - Basic linear algebra subprograms
• libgfortran - Fortran runtime
• libgomp - OpenMP (indirect dependency)

These libraries are standard on virtually all Linux distributions and are typically already installed.

Why not bundle these?

1. Size - Saves ~7 MB (~58% reduction)
2. Updates - Target systems can receive security/performance updates
3. Compatibility - Avoids conflicts with system-optimized versions (e.g., OpenBLAS, Intel MKL)

Installing on target systems (if needed):

# Ubuntu/Debian
sudo apt-get install liblapack3 libblas3 libgfortran5

# RHEL/CentOS/Fedora
sudo yum install lapack blas libgfortran

# Arch Linux
sudo pacman -S lapack blas gcc-libs

Requirements

• OS: Ubuntu 20.04+ or similar Debian-based Linux (AMD64)
• Privileges: sudo access (for apt-get install)
• Disk space: ~500MB for build, ~20MB for final package
• Time: 5-10 minutes on modern hardware

Library Dependencies

The resulting binary depends on these standard system libraries:

• libc.so.6 (glibc)
• libm.so.6 (math)
• libstdc++.so.6 (C++ stdlib)
• libgcc_s.so.1 (GCC runtime)
• liblapack.so.3 (Linear algebra) ← External dependency
• libblas.so.3 (Basic linear algebra) ← External dependency
• libgfortran.so.5 (Fortran runtime) ← External dependency

MUMPS is fully bundled - no separate MUMPS installation required on target systems!

Note: LAPACK and BLAS are dynamically linked (not bundled), reducing size by ~7 MB compared to static linking.

Troubleshooting

Build fails with "LAPACK not found"

The script should install this automatically, but if it fails:

sudo apt-get install libblas-dev liblapack-dev

Build fails with "gfortran: command not found"

sudo apt-get install gfortran

Runtime error: "cannot open shared object file"

If you see errors about missing libgfortran.so.5, liblapack.so.3, or libblas.so.3:

On the target system:

# Ubuntu/Debian
sudo apt-get install libgfortran5 liblapack3 libblas3

# RHEL/CentOS/Fedora
sudo yum install libgfortran lapack blas

Test program fails to run

Check library dependencies:

cd ~/ipopt-VERSION-linux-amd64
ldd libipopt.so.VERSION

Different Ipopt version

The script accepts any valid Ipopt release version:

./build-ipopt.sh 3.14.0
./build-ipopt.sh 3.13.4 --with-asl

Cleaning Up

Remove build artifacts (keeps final package):

rm -rf ~/ipopt-build-* ~/ipopt-install-* ~/ipopt-bundle-*

Remove everything:

rm -rf ~/ipopt-* ~/build-ipopt.sh

Customization

Edit the script to customize:

Compiler flags (line ~100):

CFLAGS="-fPIC -O2 -march=native"  # Add native optimization

Installation prefix (line ~25):

Change line ~8 from:

INCLUDE_ASL="yes"
