Categories for selection input

Selections can get very long, and it's already kinda obtrusive they take up the entire length of the page, or whole page on tablet/mobile, but one thing that's difficult with a huge list, is finding things without linearly going through. Maybe we could have special elements that are made non-selectable with different style to use as categories? Maybe if the list element starts with # or something.
