Make sorting on custom fields possible

We have a CartQuery that we need to sort on a custom String field which contains reference numbers of the underlying ERP system.
Unfortunately I couldn't find a way to do this.
Currently we sort on the field createdAt but this isn't sufficient as it is not the order we need.

Is there a way to achieve what I want or could you add the possibility to sort upon custom fields of type String?
