React Router v6 comes with new features, performance improvements and better compatibility with the latest versions of React.

Upgrading from v5 to v6 is not trivial and requires a lot of work. A first attempt and investigation was done some time ago #1575.
However, the React Router team recently released a compatibility package to ease the migration from v5 to v6: react-router-dom-v5-compat.

We should starting using that to kick start the migration work and see if we can also ease the process for Custom Applications users.
Upgrading to v6 opens up more useful features such as data loaders.
