Description

openHAB 4.3.x (current version) requires java17 or java21. openHAB 5.x, due to be available in 5 months, requires java21.

Upgrading the java version has no effect on production systems, but will allow openHAB 5.x testing

The Openhab recommendation is, to use Java 17 for Openhab 4.x and Java 21 for Openhab 5.x.
I have some problems with some bindings with Openhab 4.3.5 with Java 21 and ask to adjust the script to select the Java version 17/21 in the "Avanced Settings" configuration ... or have two different scripts one with Java 21 and one with Java 17.

My understanding is, that the scripts are COMMUNITY scripts ... designed for the community of users and not for a special single user.
The management for openhab is a bit confusing:
When openhab 4.3.5 was the stable life system the openhab script run with Java 21, even Java 17 was recommended for 4.3.5 and Java 21 was only recommended for the planned Openhab 5.
That's why I ask to change to Java 17 for openhab 4.3.5.
Then openhab 5 got the stable version and I waited for the community script.
When the community script for openbab 5 was presented it run with Java 17 instead of Java 21.
I asked to change the Java version for openhab 5 to Java 21 (Eclipse Temurin 21).
When the script was updated to openhab 5.0.0 I installed it.
After that the openhab 5.0.1 script was presented ... but I had already upgrade from openhab 5.0.0 to 5.0.1 on my system
Then the openhab 5.0.1 script was gone and openhab 4.3.7 was presented.
Why has openhab 5.0.1 has been removed?
My recommendation is to make the management procedure more transparent for the COMMUNITY.

• to have a script for the current latest stable version (openhab 5.0.1)
• to have a script for a planned test version (openhab 5.1)
• to have a script for users which do upgrade slowly (openhab 4.3.7)
  This would ensure that the scripts are for the COMMUNITY

So, i just reviewed the script.

We install java 21 with the latest stable release from openhab. The update also pulls from the official openhab repo. So if there is or was a version error, complain to openhab and not us. We can only install what they give us.

Also we dont have any beta, unstable or testing branches in any script, nor have we time to support this. We only install the latest stable release, as for almost all useres this is what they need.

If you want a pinned version or some beta branches, please install this yourself. We can and will not provide this.
