Character limit?

Hi, I can't make qr codes with much text in. It throws up an error saying "Failed to generate QR code, probably message is too large." for anything over 119 characters. This seems strange to me, don't standard QR codes have an alphanumeric capacity of 4296 characters?
Is this a constraint that has been arbitrarily imposed in the software? If so, could you please amend it?
