How to get a more up to date version in ubuntu - without compiling from source code?

As the title says. Version 3.4.4 in ubuntu seems a little bit too outdated for me. Podman was suggested to me as a better alternative to docker for working on personal projects. And now I see this.

Well it's simple: Ubuntu LTS ships old packages by design. You want updated packages, so you shouldn't use Ubuntu LTS. It doesn't sound very strange to me.

I guess there must be something equivalent to https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-faq/choosing.en.html#s3.1.3 for Ubuntu, maybe have a look. That explains the analogous situation for Debian.

Oh, that's much more recent than I thought. It sounds usable. For sure more recent than the 3.4.4 version OP mentioned.

I'm just not sure how "supported" it ends up being though, example: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/passt/+bug/2077158 (no, I'm not going to do Ubuntu backports myself, I'm not even a user). Those bugs are fixed within hours/days on the latest version.

Correct (that's 4.9.4). A bit behind RHEL 9 (5.2.2).

I did install ubuntu 24.10, installed podman and it is version 5.0.3
