Access to destination path during the query session

I want to have a template create subfolders based on the basename of the destination folder. Is this already possible somehow? I tried with _copier_answers._dst_path, but that is not available until all questions have been answered.

I'd like to be able to do something like this:

microservice_directory:
  when: false
  type: str
  default: "{{ _copier_answers._dst_path|basename }}"

microservice_module:
  when: false
  type: str
  default: "{{ microservice_directory|replace('-service', '')|replace('-', '_') }}"

And then use both variables in my template.

This is currently not possible but has been discussed before in #1050. We're open to a contribution in case you're interested. 🙂

OK. Given the previous discussions, it makes sense to make _copier_conf available in query context and not only in render context. I could work on that but not right now. Maybe in a few weeks time.

Note this is possible via ContextHook code (see Altering the context), as I've been playing around with. Bit hacky but works, if you're comfortable having to use --trust / --UNSAFE:

I've been using (abusing) that in my template layering experiments to reload the .copier-answers.yaml file's dict into the jinja context, to let my "overlay" template reuse base-template answers.
This does break the assumption that templates are horizontal and unaware of each other, but making them vertical "overrides" enables some cool possibilities (which I'll raise in a separate discussion, as it's off topic here)

FWIW, while executing tasks, the CWD is the destination path.

There's also #1271 about dynamic generation of folders or files.
