Is there any guidance on how to setup the atom feed, and associated html header tags so the feed can be discovered?

Operations you have already tried

I've found that there is an /assets/feed.xml file in my theme path, but I can't find any guidance on how to get this to start working.

I've navigated to my.site.com/feed.xml and I get a 404 error response.

Anything else?

I have now enabled the RSS icon in the /_data/contact.yml file, and the icon shows on my homepage.
However, using feeder.co/, I'm getting a "could not parse feed" when entering my page URL, so in the above example if I were to enter https://chirpy.cotes.page it would return this error. - in fact, if I enter that, it does return that error!

If I enter the same URL with /feed.xml appended, it does work, but this is apparently having issues with some feed subscriptions...
