Interesting idea. I think we would need a more robust set of approaches here to decide how this might be handled smoothly, with more details. The WYSIWYG editor is an unlikely target to try to implement this, for example. It's going to work best for manual intervention.

However, some kind of post save triggering parser might be worth exploring, but performance there would need to be considered. Work here would also need to consider how changes made in the WYSIWYG might clash with autogenerated markup attached to relevant headings. What occurs if a heading is and h3 and the parser/formatter auto adds a hyphenated id of the heading itself, and then someone chooses it and changes it to an h4? Will the id survive? What happens if the wording of the heading is altered, will the id update?

Anyone hoping to pursue this should certainly comment here a conceptual approach prior to submitting a PR, its a worthwhile feature to explore, but given the myriad of ways it might be accomplished, and the possible spiraling considerations we should certainly work out specific approaches before moving to PRs here.

The age-old method of solving this is to swap to the src view and manually add them in the editor. That is of course an alternative, but perhaps not a desired one.
