How to run cypress command from custom event listener?

Hi, what I'm trying to achieve is something like this:

const callbackFn = (message: string) => {
  cy.request(...); // call an async cypress command here
};

cy.window().invoke('on', 'message', callbackFn);

This results in an error like this:

CypressError: Cypress detected that you returned a promise from a command while also invoking one or more cy commands in that promise.

The command that returned the promise was:

  > `cy.contains()`

The cy command you invoked inside the promise was:

  > `cy.wrap()`

Because Cypress commands are already promise-like, you don't need to wrap them or return your own promise.

Cypress will resolve your command with whatever the final Cypress command yields.

I understand that when the event is fired, the callback is not added to the Cypress command queue and instead called synchronously. I guess that's why Cypress is not allowing me to return a promise? How can I get around this?

I am also struggling with this. Something I thought simple is proving rather difficult:
