Automatically update IP for known devices

When the IP Address of the device changes the integration breaks. I know other devices don't and wasn't sure if this is due to them implementing something to manage IP changes.

I am aware of tieing the IP address to the MAC in the router as a solution there

Otherwise this integration seems to be working well with my Fujitsu aircon units.

To do so would probably require adding in mac address tracking and using DHCP at startup time to find the devices. Doable, but not sure if/when I can get to it. Open to a PR though

I've asked on the general forums if there is a HA method for mac address tracking as it feels like integrations should be using a standard service for this common problem rather than building the logic in each one. If there is useful response I'll inclide in the PR when I create it.

I don't think HA really concerns itself with that. This plugin currently tracks devices via IP and has some very loose dhcp coralling for a subset of wireless interface dongles. You can see some of this in config_flow.py (I didn't work on it so I'm not that familiar). I think this should just require a lookup and migration for historical devices and then start-up would require a discovery to find I think we should probably double track devices as I think doing by IP primarily is pretty stable, but having mac addresses available (which might relate to device_ids? I do not recall ATM) for lookup when IPs aren't available / mac doesn't match as a fallback would be nice. Heck, we may already have all the details laying around to make this even more actionable

Generally speaking, HA Core does not allow IP addresses as unique identifiers for this very reason. Mac addresses, serial numbers, Hostnames (rare cases), and other device specific information is favored. This information is typically gathered through a few of the discovery integrations: ssdp, dhcp, zero_config, etc

The device id is used as the unique identifier, but the ip is used to locate the device

PR is a pull request, which is a code change that implements the functionality. If this is a need of yours (or others), then the fastest way to get the improvement is making the code change yourself. Otherwise I'll get to it when I get to it

Ah - PR in my coding days was a problem report! Unfortuately my coding skills are rather rusty and predate Python/Github. I started using HA to try to get back some lost dev skills! Many thanks

I am unable to use the UI to change the IP address of a Airstage unit (having to use a spare router which doesn't put my IoT things on a seperate VLAN)

Even changing the two IP addresses on the /config/.storage/core.config_entries does not work

The IP address in the UI and the first IP address in the config file keep on reverting to the previous IP address

Any thoughts?

@gorstj your issue sounds like it is a new issue and you should make a new ticket. When you do make that new issue, please include the version of HA you're running, as well as the version of ha_airstage to assist me in debugging your situation.
