Verification email doesn't send: error: [resendVerificationEmail] Error resending verification email: Connection timeout

What happened?

I never receive a verification email as I sign up. I try clicking the resend verification email and get the error error: [resendVerificationEmail] Error resending verification email: Connection timeout

.env file has:
EMAIL_SERVICE=gmail
EMAIL_USERNAME=[email protected]
EMAIL_PASSWORD=16char_gmail_app_password
EMAIL_FROM_NAME="My Name"
EMAIL_FROM=[email protected]

Steps to Reproduce

1. Start the containers - no error messages.
2. Try to sign up as a new user - never receive confirmation email
3. Check logs, see error: [resendVerificationEmail] Error resending verification email: Connection timeout

To the best of my abilities, yes.

My .env file has:
EMAIL_SERVICE=gmail
EMAIL_USERNAME=[email protected]
EMAIL_PASSWORD=16char_gmail_app_password
EMAIL_FROM_NAME="My Name"
EMAIL_FROM=[email protected]

I have double checked password and username.
I have checked that I don't have other EMAIL_ values in my .env.
I have checked I don't have duplicate values in my .env

This is running on a standard DigitalOcean droplet.

Not sure what more I can check. Or if there are any other ways of checking for errors?
