Support for OpenAI o4-mini-deep-research Model

What features would you like to see added?

OpenAI o4-mini-deep-research is now available and offers capabilities for in-depth research tasks. Adding support for this model in LC would allow it to be used not only as a conversational model but also as a dedicated research tool. Including this functionality could benefit users seeking more advanced research workflows.

Could this functionality be made available as a tool, similar to how Web Search works? This would provide users with flexibility to decide when to use Web Search or Deep Research.

It's now supported when enabling use of Responses API and Web Search:

@danny-avila I am unable to get this to work. I added 4-mini-deep-research to the .env file:
OPENAI_MODELS=o4-mini,o4-mini-deep-research,o3,gpt-4.1,gpt-4o-mini,gpt-4o,gpt-3.5-turbo

When I chat with this model, I get error:

Something went wrong. Here's the specific error message we encountered: An error occurred while processing the request: 404 This model is only supported in v1/responses and not in v1/chat/completions. Troubleshooting URL: https://js.langchain.com/docs/troubleshooting/errors/MODEL_NOT_FOUND/

I also tried o4-mini-deep-research-2025-06-26 as per the OpenAI documentation. Same error.

You're not setting the model parameters that are only available on v0.7.9-rc1 and later.

@danny-avila any plans to allow custom Response API? I want to develop my own custom deep research agent and instantiate it in a FastAPI solution, and output the same format as OpenAI Responses API, with stream of responses that inform about the state of the research, such as action and status.

you can already do this via a custom endpoint and toggle responses api, or add it via addParams with useResponsesApi: true

Sorry just one more question. Will it show in the UI the current status? I ask because currently with o4-mini-deep-research I was able to run it and get the final message, but had no updates on the action and status, which due to the quite long time it takes to finish the research, we don't really know if it still working in the background.
