ESP32 Blueretro diy install, controllers not working

Installed an esp32 with the latest firmware of blueretro into my gamecube. After lots of trial and error I got it to power on and pair with xbox and ps5 controllers. My problem is the controllers do nothing. No input at all, and any game I play it doesn't even recognize there's a player 2 if I boot in using a standard gamecube controller. I've spent I don't even know how many hours trying to get this to work and I'm at a loss.

what console? which controller? which firmware file? which guide did you follow?

Edited original. Gamecube, used Xbox and ps5 controllers. Followed a multitude of guides all over the place. Hw2 from darthcloud.itch.io. Main guide i followed said hw1 but other sources said hw2. I didn't run a wire from the reset switch because where the board is located I have access to the boot switch. I also have it powered with the 3v3 line into the corresponding pin on the esp32. Thought about switching to a 5v to the vin pin. This is the main guide I followed. Also, red led stays solid, and blue led is off by default. Trying to pair controllers when system is on with boot button doesn't work, only setting controllers into pairing mode and turning the console on pairs them.
