Brainstorming for cool demo projects (tutorial, app) for PortalJS

It really helps in developing a product to have a demo project and use cases to motivate the work.

What could they be for PortalJS?

Principles

What would be a cool thing we could build in <= 2d that would get traction with others e.g. post on hacker news

• Less than < 2d to build
• Bonus points if kind of thing you could post on hacker news
• Can also be tutorial like things: "here's how we rebuilt X in 1d" (cf the way that js frameworks always build a todo list app, or "here's how we build a twitter clone in Erlang in 3d ..."

Brainstorm

• Got a few datasets? Build a data portal in 10m
• Got some datasets on github ... Create a nice data portal in 10m
• Build a data portal with data stories ...
• Blob storage based data portal: S3, R2, Google Cloud Storage, Azure Blob Storage ... anything else. Maybe have a component that can build a catalog out of it ?
• Datasets in parquet
• Add a data catalog to your NextJS website
• CKAN tutorial: build a data portal frontend with CKAN as the headless DMS backend
  • build a new frontend to data.gov ...
• Dataverse as backend: e.g. replicate https://electionlab.mit.edu/data
• Reboot OpenSpending.org - we have all the data migrated to github etc already and even had a plan along these lines (cf Design of New OpenSpending System openspending/openspending#1490 - and need only do read part of that!)

App

• For CKAN users: an app where you can drop your CKAN instance URI and get a new Portal...
• DCAT users: an app where you can drop your DCAT endpoint and get a Portal.
