Prefetch settings

Would it make sense to mention the Prefetch/Preload settings? I had a problem on Android where ads were still showing up on Reddit, and someone mentioned that disabling the prefetch setting would help; indeed, it did.

I'm not quite sure why that would allow ads to show up, but maybe it does.

Another thing that I noticed is that when switching tabs, some kind of background refreshing happens. So on Reddit it can show ads where previously there weren't any. This is on Android.

Good catch. I must have disabled prefetch early on. I was going crazy trying to figure out why I couldn't get the same adblock setup to remove Reddit ads on my Android. I finally came up with a Reddit adblock rule for my personal list that killed them. It's a bit strong.

I was able to replicate it on my test PC. I had to delete cookies/cache/etc to get the ads to show back up, but you're right. With my original adblock lists and your disable prefetch setting, I don't need the custom rule. Unfortunately, as you say, it doesn't help with mobile.

I'll think about where and how to phrase the info about the setting, and add it. Suggestions are welcome. You can probably tell I haven't really maintained a repo before.

Interesting, I've been experimenting with prefetch being turned on for both Android and desktop, and I don't get any ads. I'm not sure what the issue was, but turning it off definitely helped. So, it could be mentioned that, if some ads show up, it can be turned off.

Another tip that could be mentioned is that, if ads show up on a page, it's a good idea to try closing it and opening it again. Sometimes that helps with Reddit, in my experience.

I have noticed this about the lingering connections. Before Vivaldi changed the interface, and used to show the adblock shield on the home/new tab page, if I hit the home button, the shield would show blocked activity on the base page. Refreshing would change the icon to the nothing being blocked icon. I never knew if it was a bug, or if there were lingering connections from the previous site. I'm still in the habit of refreshing my homepage now.

With the prefetch settings, I noticed on android that occasionally pages will initially give an error about page not reachable, or some similar language. Though it does go through almost right after. Have you noticed the behavior? And do you think it would be tolerable for average users? It doesn't bother me.

Last question. Do you manually update your lists, or let them refresh on their own. I came up with a script for the desktop version. It basically resets the Updated on timestamp to a static old date on all the lists . They seem to all refresh within about 10-15 mins. Would you have any interest if I put the scripts on GitHub, or is it overkill, and save my time?

Hmm. I have not seen these. Maybe some connection or device specific issue where internet is not reachable. It could be tolerable if there are benefits for the average user, but probably they prefer stability.

Let them refresh. Updating them sounds like a hassle.

The are very brief page errors, then continue to the site on their own after a second or two. I've never had to refresh. To me it's inconsequential for the benefit. I'll add a note on the README.md about it (I'll make sure and credit you).

Thanks for the input about the refresh script. I work in IT, I also like to tinker. I've seen posts about wanting an update button, or uBO users complaining when they could no longer find the Purge option. I'll save myself the headache of putting the scripts out there.

Along those lines, this post I made is probably more trouble than it's worth. Although I haven't tested it for any YouTube benefit.
