ALE freezing on a small c++ file

When ALE is linting a c++ file, sometimes it lags out vim entirely for around 4 seconds.

Let's say I open a file that has this code

    int test = 1;
    for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++) {
        std::cout << test + i << std::endl;
    }
}

and I make a change to it, vim immediately freezes for around 4 seconds after I exit out of insert mode.
