WhatsApp media/files seem encrypted. How to retrieve?

I have read the documentation front to back, back to front, but I can't find support for what I'm experiencing.. I sent a PDF to my chatbot (on a group), and the file was persisted on the host, but copying via WinSCP revealed an encrypted (or just jibberiish) . What am I missing? If this is somewhere well covered in documentation, I do apologise.

Not sure how this solved itself, but when I retrieved the PDF again with WinSCP it opened without problem.
