** in notification text breaks some URLs

I'm sending notifications to a Google Chat (or whatever it's called now) room. When URLs appear in messages, they're automatically turned into links. There's a default for the notification text to be wrapped in **. This appears then at the end of the URLs, which breaks many:

https://www.apple.com/** 404's.

I don't see a way to fix this in the "Customize notification body" settings. I also tried to add a space to the end of the URL, but that gets smartly removed.
