Resources / Weblinks for Members

One of the common requests in the community is to build a repository of resources for members to get started in various areas relevant to networking. Because there is a wealth of information out there, and there's no single person who can curate such a list, what I'd like to do is to create a list of resources, hosted on the website, with members' testimonials.

If you have experience with any particular resources that've helped you, please drop a note here with a link to the resource and a quick 2-4 sentence explanation as to how it's helped you. Also please note how/if you would like the testimonial attributed (e.g. "Anonymous Server Member", "@myusername#9298", "My Full Name", etc).

Also to note: This is for anything relevant to issues network professionals may face. One recurring theme in our industry is mental health and work/life balance. If you have any knowledge of widely accepted resources in this category, please drop them here as well. The testimonial bit is not necessary here but may be helpful - DM me if you want to keep this private.

Hi i wanted to give my thoughts mainly on the categories but some perhaps list

• Fundamental-networking-knowledge -- fundamental knowledge to help network engineers learn new technologies and troubleshoot problems at a elementary level (network models, design tradeoffs, the 4 aspects of a transport protocol, much of the stuff that Russ White puts out in his books, video trainings and blog posts on his website rule11.tech. Russ whites view on the network fundamentals in his training has had a huge impact on my understanding of network protocols and how I approach them.. i am now trying my best to continue to build a very fundamental understanding of protocols so that a mental model is built and with that new insight, patterns and trade offs can be found when im trying to understand the new technologies or thinking about how a protocol would affect a networks stability etc. https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1925 I would place this in there as well. Russ White Computer Networking Problems and Solutions is one book he authored.

• Ephemeral-networking-knowledge -- knowledge that is more relevant to the current times and trends (overview of VXLAN, BGP command guide, building an infrastructure as code solution etc . so links to Cisco Live , cisco documentation for different IOS versions, etc

• Marketing-networking -- not sure of specific resources here but links to maybe improving your linkedin profile or something.
  Life and learning

• learning resources: I think learning how to learn is really underrated. it would be nice to have some learning resources for new folks to help them build processes for themselves that they can repeatedly execute in order to learn some new technologies. Some book suggestions I would put in here. Cal newport Deep work Myelin the talent code . perhaps an article to the KISS keep it simple stupid approach and the concept of 'essentialism'. but you cannot substitute hard work in the end, just learning how to learn will help you build a process that you can execute with hard work consistently.

• mental health : some hotlines on here perhaps

and also! Under Ephemeral-networking-knowledge there should be a list of software that could be of use like netbox grafana librenms . Open source solutions perhaps a bit less known but very beneficial

and under learning-resources I would put another list of softwares to help with learning like Microsoft OneNote , draw.io. anything that helps them get on the ground running

I particularly like the idea of Open source section as mentioned by @hussainongithub I came across a few of those tips in the forum here and there and a place gathering all of those would be nice.

@jrokeach you seem to imply that you want "Resources / Weblinks for Members" on Discord can you elaborate on how you would achieve this in discord? I don't know discord thus was thinking Github (pages, repository or other) would a be a better place.

@fabou78 my intent would be to locate it on the website. This would allow us to format it as desired. It actually could tie in with the bot in the future since they use the same database.
