How to release from a branch?

I have to create a patch release from a branch of django-tailwind-cli. But it seems as I am unable to release from a branch. If I build the wheel locally, everything is fine, but somehow if I do it with the release pipeline, PyPI is not happy. I don't see any issue in the GitHub action. Can someone help me with this issue?

Hi Oliver!

Your wheel's METADATA version is 2.4 and the maximum supported version listed in error message is 2.3:

Checking dist/django_tailwind_cli-2.22.0-py3-none-any.whl: ERROR    InvalidDistribution: Metadata is missing required fields: Name,        
         Version.                                                               
         Make sure the distribution includes the files where those fields are   
         specified, and is using a supported Metadata-Version: 1.0, 1.1, 1.2,   
         2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3.  

That tag is using an older version of gh-action-pypi-publish, I suspect its an issue of the build tooling thats installed in the workflow being too new for the upload action.

I bet if you changed these lines in release.yml:

  uses: pypa/gh-action-pypi-publish@release/v1.10

to

  uses: pypa/gh-action-pypi-publish@release/v1.12

It would work.

Thanks a lot. I looked at the message for an hour yesterday, and never had the idea to actually investigate this.

Thanks Brian, I'll push these updates down to the best practice repo. Looks like it's already done. Put this down as another reason to have our own GHA action for projects to use so it's update one place and everywhere gets to benefit.

It wouldn't let you release to PyPI from a branch, but it would let you release to test.pypi.org from a branch through the workflow dispatch action.
