I'm very confused by your examples here.

• How does the compiler ensure that fields are assigned non-null values in this late scenario? What actually causes that in a way that wouldn't just be solved if you declared the field as string? in the first place?
• Nothing about late locals seems like it's necessary? Remove late from that example and that's just valid C# code, and has been since C# 1.0.
• Are you familiar with required properties?
