Why 2D coordinates are used for prediction if 3D conformer generation was failed?

I found this function `smi2_3Dcoords` and it returns 2D coordinates which are used for predictions if 3D conformer embedding failed. What is the reason of that? Can we trust those predictions made from2D coordinates? If so, why we need to embed 3D conformers?
