Yes, this can happen if you are doing lots of access to the *.md files for different location. Under the covers its using https://api.github.com to access content in the git repositories. I've only ever seen this happen while I'm doing a lot of testing.

But here's the good news

There is another bit of good news - the fact we hit a rate limit here means a lot of people were interested in the news and visited the site on a new release.

So it makes sense that we have exceeded rate limits here, the limit is 60/hour. In peak times, such as around a release, 60/hour seems quite low.

Is it possible to use authenticated access to api.github.com here? That would allow 5k/hour which is probably enough for any peak level amount of access.

PS I think I misunderstood how news was being generated. The api.github.com is being accessed from the client, not the server. So we can't authenticate and a single user is unlikely to exceed the 60/hour.

If multiple people in the same company access the news in the same hour (or use other api.github.com rest services) then, since they are grouped by public IP address, the rate limit is more likely to be hit.

Yes, I it's a client side rate limit and I imagine in a big org such access might be all attributed to the org and not per user.

I think the notifications are driving an extremely rapid download rate, this is less than 24 hours:

So that that's likely to be driving a much larger than usual review of the N&N documentation.

I don't think we should sweat too much about this...
