Line width pref not used in XML formatter

When I set the line width to e.g. 250 characters in the XML formatter then this value is not used for formatting line.

Lines wider than 80 characters are still wrapped to multiple lines.

You mean max line width preferences from xml format prefences page?

I think the reporter is saying that the XML formatter is ignoring the line width setting. I reported this in #1216, and it was never fixed.

As of Eclipse EE 2025-09 (4.37.0), if I set the line width to 999, it still wraps:

#1216 should have never been closed, as this was never fixed, as per my comment.

@garretwilson I cannot reproduce this. I am using Eclipse 2025-09 and when I open an XML file with the Generic Code Editor the max line length of Preferences > XML (Wild Web Developer) > Formatting > Max line width is respected during formatting.

In case you opened the file via the XML Editor and have problems during formatting, this editor is not contributed by Wild Web Developer but by Eclipse XML Editors and Tools from https://github.com/eclipse-sourceediting/sourceediting

I'm editing a pom.xml file using the POM editor. It's the one with tabs at the bottom, including "Overview", "Dependencies", …and finally pom.xml. It's that last pom.xml tab I'm using for editing. (It's the one that that tabs break the overall Eclipse navigation in eclipse-platform/eclipse.platform.ui#2864 and nobody is in the mood to fix it.)

I don't need the "Overview" and "Dependencies" and stuff so much anyway, and with so many bugs accumulating, it's getting in the way. Are you saying there is another XML editor? How do I know which one I'm using? How do I change? This is the one I've been using for probably 20 years.

You're right; the generic POM editor doesn't wrap the line inappropriately. Thanks for pointing that out.

Does anyone have permissions to move this bug (or preferably #1216) to that other project? If not, I'll refile this bug there.

Since the issue is with the POM Editor I believe it is best to report the issue at https://github.com/eclipse-m2e/m2e-core/issues/
