Welcome! This guide will help you get started with the HAFiscal replication package. Follow the steps below based on what you want to accomplish.
Read: Quick Start section in main README.md
Run: ./reproduce.sh --docs
Time: 5-10 minutes
Requirements: LaTeX installation only
Read in order:
- INSTALLATION.md - Set up your environment
- REPLICATION.md Section 4 - Execution instructions
- Code/README.md - Understand the computational workflow
Run: ./reproduce.sh --comp full
Time: 4-5 days on high-end hardware
Requirements: Python environment, LaTeX, computational resources
Read: INSTALLATION.md - Set up your environment
Run: ./reproduce.sh --comp min
Time: ~1 hour
Requirements: Python environment, LaTeX
Read: Code/README.md
Location: Code/HA-Models/ directory
Key file: Code/HA-Models/do_all.py (main orchestrator)
Read: TROUBLESHOOTING.md
Also check: QUICK-REFERENCE.md for common commands
Read: CONTRIBUTING.md
Note: This repository is the Single Source of Truth (SST). External contributions go to HAFiscal-Public.
If this is your first time working with HAFiscal, follow this sequence:
- Read: Main README.md - Overview and quick start
- Time: 5 minutes
- Purpose: Understand the repository structure and what's included
- Read: INSTALLATION.md - Platform-specific installation
- Time: 10-30 minutes (depending on platform)
- Purpose: Install required software (Python, LaTeX, dependencies)
- Run:
./reproduce.sh --comp min- Minimal computational test - Time: ~1 hour
- Purpose: Verify that your environment is working correctly
- Read: REPLICATION.md - Complete replication guide
- Time: 15-20 minutes
- Purpose: Understand data sources, computational steps, and outputs
- Read: Code/README.md - Detailed code workflow
- Run:
./reproduce.sh --comp full- Full computational replication - Time: 4-5 days
- Purpose: Reproduce all results from the paper

Goal: Generate the paper PDF from existing results
# 1. Clone repository
git clone {{REPO_URL}}.git
cd {{REPO_NAME}}
# 2. Install LaTeX (if not already installed)
# macOS: brew install --cask mactex
# Linux: sudo apt-get install texlive-full
# 3. Compile paper
./reproduce.sh --docs
# Output: HAFiscal.pdfTime: 5-10 minutes
Documentation: REPLICATION.md Section 4.1
Goal: Test that the environment works without full computation
# 1. Follow installation steps (see INSTALLATION.md)
# 2. Set up Python environment
./reproduce/reproduce_environment_comp_uv.sh
source .venv/bin/activate
# 3. Run minimal computation
./reproduce.sh --comp min
# 4. Compile paper
./reproduce.sh --docsTime: ~1 hour
Documentation: INSTALLATION.md, REPLICATION.md Section 4.2
Goal: Reproduce all computational results from the paper
# 1. Follow installation steps (see INSTALLATION.md)
# 2. Set up Python environment
./reproduce/reproduce_environment_comp_uv.sh
source .venv/bin/activate
# 3. Download data (if needed)
bash Code/Empirical/download_scf_data.sh
# 4. Run full computation
