UX Improvement: make sure the user knows what filters are being applied

Currently a filter will be applied, but aside from the page update there is no change to the UI. Therefore this information is inaccessible to the user. This information needs to be transparent.

To accomplish this we will need to create separate components for the filter buttons. Otherwise managing state becomes far too complicated.
