Impossible to Log In unless Homeserver has Open Registration

Steps to reproduce

When I created a matrix account for my friend on our synapse homeserver @ matrix.cyberia.club, and told him to enter the homeserver URL into element, It just threw up a "registration is disabled" toast and would not let him log in with the username and password that he chose.

Maybe we are just not "galaxy brained" enough, but we could not figure out any way past it.

Outcome

What did you expect?

I expected that a user who already knows thier username and password would be able to log into their account on a homeserver that does not have open registration.

What happened instead?

User was blocked from using Element.

Sorry about the lack of additional information but im pretty sure this is just how the app works, and that in itself is the issue. (UI design issue)

I did not check the "willing to provide PR" checkbox simply because I'm not sure if I have the time to set up what I assume is fairly high friction dev environment.

I have done android app development before and I would probably be willing to put the hours in to contribute a fix but only if I can get some level of assurance that it will actually be merged (within reason).

If there is any other information that would be helpful, let me know.

The user was created on the synapse server via the /_synapse/admin/v1/register API and the hmac with the shared secret.
