Error when package is in a subtree: aurpublish: unrecognized package '...'

I want my packages in a `pkgs` directory next to the `git` directory, but it doesn‘t seem possible.

$ tree pkgs
+ foo
  + PKGBUILD
  + .SRCINFO
$ aurpublish pkgs/foo
aurpublish: unrecognized package 'foo'
