support for 0.8?

Getting ready to set things up and noticed that replacing the .7.2 jar with the .8 one causes a compile issue. Poking around at the code for SimpleConsumer but not 100% what I'm doing in there yet. Thought I'd ping first to see if anyone had tried to do this yet.

We have not tried using this with Kafka 0.8 or above. We currently use 0.7.2 in production. If you get this working, we could make a branch and tag for this.

I was unable to get this to work right and we ended up using Kinesis from
Amazon ultimately.
