The raw scope allows you to write rules that are directly applied to the unprocessed file contents, meaning you can target markup syntax itself. So, for example, you'd do something like this:

extends: existence
message: "'%s' shouldn't be italicized."
scope: raw
nonword: true
tokens:
  - '\*(?:word1|word2)\*'
