Hey! Your first idea was implemented in v1.02, check out The second idea is better left for alternative firmware implementations (forks). Personally I think that menu access is needed more often than volume access. That is the reason why click invokes the menu, and short press is used as the volume shortcut. I've got two ideas:
1: For the battery - lets turn off the LCD light and screen after 30 seconds of no user input.
The audio will be on, and the battery will last longer.
2: User input tweak - we could use the wheel a little better ...
A: Wiggle control wheel for volume control.
B: Tap the wheel to then change the tuning.
C: Press and hold the wheel for a few seconds to enter the menu.
