I am opening this issue as a place to start a conversation to see if its of interest to clean this up. if not, feel free to close.

There are many dead links around the website, some of these are projects that are dead, have changed names, some are typos that just need to be fixed, some just need to be deleted etc. here is a list of ones ive found (some of these may work as i used a link checker to find them, but spot checking most of them have resulted in bad links):

Additional context

Im willing to go through them and make best judgements on fixing the obvious ones (typos, domain changes - ie matic.network changed to polygon.technology) and separating out the more nuanced ones for a different ticket or to be discussed in #content channel on discord. If this kind of thing is of interest let me know and I can start cleaning some of this up while getting familiar with the repo

Hi @brossetti1 this is awesome! Our website is indeed huge and this is a pain point I have been looking into solving recently.

What software did you run to get those flagged? Can this list also include our website URL's where these links are shown?

perfect, so for the list Ive attached here so far, its just a small script combined with lychee and I am only running it locally against the public folder so far but i was thinking of using the sitemap to crawl eventually and run lychee against the production instance in case there are other dynamically generated pages pulling data from somewhere in the app but that feels like overkill right now... if I incorporated the sitemap crawling i could most likely provide the url where these bad links exist, otherwise, i could probably add something to the script to determine what file these bad links exist in but it also kinda feels like overkill in my opinion if the content is statically generated.

these links are pretty easy to go through themselves and test weather they are actually dead or not manually and cross reference against the waybackmachine. I see this task being broken up into multiple prs in order to resolve and coordinate around what should be done in what scenario:

• submit 1 pr across all the links using my best judgement where its obviously a bad link and easy to discern the correct link, ie project name/domain changed (ie matic network is now polygon), external doc link changed pathing (saw this with some chainlink urls/aave redesigned their landing page so broken link just 404s), removing links for projects that no longer exist that have no associated content with the link -- basically all the obvious easy cleanups in 1 pr.

• another pr taking my best stab at correcting the links associated with content that are not obvious.

• potentially individual prs and best guess for bad links that are associated with content and might be more nuanced on what needs to be done with them.. maybe this is overkill ¯_(ツ)_/¯

• catalog the remaining bad links that might be accompanied with content, docs, etc that need some more nuanced thought behind what they require for changes, post that refined list of bad links back to this issue to discuss further and move on from there.

I am getting familiar with the repo presently and I think right now I only have one question. it seems like all the content is basically static and lives in the public folder (other than docs) - is that correct?

I would say in general, err on the side of removal of anything outdated... and don't get blocked by replacement content. That can be done separately.

Mostly!

• the root "docs" folder you mentioned is strictly documentation about this website repo, and is separate from the website content intentionally
• the /public/content/ folder houses all of the markdown content, which comprises the majority of the site, yes.
• Some pages are not markdown, and those are .tsx React page components, which can currently be seen in src/pages/** (at least until we transition to Next.js App Router)

fyi lychee does have some good tooling around setting up some monitoring for this kind of stuff but again, might be overkill and whatnot

As a separate task if you're interested, would definitely be interested in automating this process!

@wackerow @konopkja ive opened an initial pr and set it as ready for review at this point because id like to get some feedback on if this is an acceptable way to go about the process. details are in the linked pr, just looking to see if this is accetable before continuing or maybe its a good time to merge some of these changes.. anyways, ill keep going but wanted to get it out there in case this is starting to get annoying to review. thanks for any feedback.

@wackerow @konopkja I have attached prs for changing links after going through a first pass on the broken links and using my best judgement - below is a list of the rest of the links where I attempted to find the appropriate replacement, but could not narrow down an exact or good match, ive attached notes in table format. these should probably be looked at in a more detailed exploration with the content team. I am going to leave this issue and prs here until the two prs attached are reviewed and/or merged, let me know how youd like to proceed with the broken links listed below

fyi, ive done my best to keep these lists separated in two sections, Stand Alone Links typically just have the link in the content pages with no associated content, while Nuanced Links with associated content are links that go side by side with additional content.
