The ROS-free launch of maplab is currently not working. Since all of the visualization is based on RVIZ and therefore require a ROS publisher to work this has a low priority from our point of view. So far this has not been a requirement by anyone and we encourage you to contribute to this repository if you need it.

Building maplab will download and check-out dependencies, which can be very slow depending on the speed of you internet connection.
